Hi,

Can anyone tell me can I do a direct CPU swap and change nothing else.

Current build:
CPU: Intel i5 4460 3,2ghz
Mobo: Asus K30AD_M31AD_M51AD_M32AD (nothing special, but has the correct slot for the new CPU)
RAM: 16GB Corsair 1866
GPU: GTX 1080 (Gigabyte)
PSU: Corsair 750
2 x SSD (1 x 240GB and 1 x 960GB)
Windows 10

I have the opportunity buy a cheap i7 4790K from a friend but I only have the Intel stock cooler, is this enough to keep it cool and will the i7 work with the other hardware? I'm not into overclocking but I may try it with the new processor when i can afford to by a better cooling set-up.

Will it just switch over?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Solution
Although it doesn't specifically say it will take the i7-4790K, the specs do list 4th gen i3/i5/i7 as compatible so you should be good:
https://www.asus.com/uk/Tower-PCs/K30AD/specifications/

I would definitely consider an aftermarket cooler based on what others posted.
the 4790k has a significantly higher power target than the 4460
I don't know if Intel uses the same cooler throughout the whole 4000 series in terms of cooling power, if so it would work
if not it doesn't

however I'd recommend investing some 35$ in an aftermarket cooler anyway

You will need a better cooler than the stock one. The 4790k runs pretty hot, and it's stock cooler it comes with isn't really enough for it.

Depending on the size of your case, the Coolermaster Hyper212 evo is popular and about $25, but it's pretty tall.
If you need something smaller, the Noctua NH-L9 is a good low profile choice, but are a bit more expensive at around $35.

Thanks, how do I find that out?

I searched through cmd and it gave me this

ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. K30AD_M31AD_M51AD_M32AD 140831161000927 Rev X.0x

I'm not in a position to check at the moment, I search google and got this

http://www.userbenchmark.com/System/Asus-K30AD-M31AD-M51AD/4263

So it seems people are using i7 on this mobo

Go for a aftermarket cooler for sure. I ran my I7 4790k with stock cooler for a couple of months before upgrading to aftermarket. The stock cooler temps were sometimes gettings to 80-90's while gaming. With aftermarket cooler i now game in 60's to low 70s celsius.
