I just took out my Gigabyte r9 280 to RMA it, due to artifacts. Can I still get sound through HDMI on my tv? or do I have to use the 3.5mm jacks?

Solution
Yes they do the sound for the headphones would be realtek. As it says on the Asrock site

7.1 CH HD Audio with Content Protection (Realtek ALC892 Audio Codec)

The sound for HDMI I would say is Intel HD audio
I have a AsRock H97 pro4 MOBO. And roswill lineglow case. I think maybe my mobo doesn't support HDMI audio?(I thought hdmi was always audio and video, but I guess maybe not?)

I plugged a 3foot 3.5mm cord into the front panel and the pc sound slot on the back of my TV and now I have sound, but would still like to just use HDMI for both if possible...if anyone can tell me if it is possible with my motherboard?

That mobo does have onboard video inc HDMI. http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/H97%20Pro4/index.asp?cat=

HDMI is audio and video. But the drivers for the onboard video have to be installed so it'll work.

Did you install the video drivers? And are you using the onboard video?

How do you know HDMI doesn't work then, if you don't know if the mobo supports it lol?

Have you connected an HDMI cable from the onboard video to the TV? Obviously you have to switch the AV channel on the TV to the input you've connected the HDMI to (from the PC)

Is there a digital audio (HDMI) in sounds?

My motherboard does not have onboard video, rather it supports it, but my processor does... not sure if there is a difference.
My r9 280 had a HDMI driver that came with it, AMD high def audio device.

I guess I'll just repeat myself again :
Yes I have Realtek audio drivers installed. Yes I have video drivers...Windows automatically installed the drivers for my Intel HD Graphics when I booted it up the first time without the R9280, and when I go to device manager it says that the driver is up to date.

That mobo like I said does have onboard video, the pic is here

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H97%20Pro4/?cat=Specifications

Its got HDMI VGA and DVI. But the CPU has to support HD graphics for those to work like it says on the site

*Intel® HD Graphics Built-in Visuals and the VGA outputs can be supported only with processors which are GPU integrated.

What CPU is on it

DONT rely on windowsupdate for drivers they dont always work and theyre not always the latest. Get them from the manufacturer's site

The R9 HDMI audio drivers or its video drivers wont work with the onboard video or HDMI, theyre different

If the R9 is not in the case now, uninstall its drivers

Here is the thread that I was looking at that made me question wether it could support HDMI audio. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/281791-30-motherboard-hdmi-support-audio

It probably is the driver, I just found a thread on Intel about it that I could not find before.

Yeah I got it working, was a driver issue. Thankl you so much for your help, and sorry if I came across rude..was having a bad night last night. I kept getting BSoD, found out I have a faulty RAM stick, in addition to a GPU that is causing artifacts.(The build is less than a month old :/)
