It depends on the laptop.
That said, a single stick of ram will be slower than running a two stick kit of 4gb each.

While its possible, I've had trouble in the past when adding the motherboards max capacity all into one slot (in your case this is 8 gigs).

Also worth adding, that 2x4GB sticks are a little cheaper than a 1x8GB stick, at least where I live.
