I was thinking of going with 2400mhz because I'm worried about managing heat and voltage as it gets older but I noticed with DDR3 that finding sticks less than 1800 mhz became a problem later as the standard aged. Do you think I'll run into a similar problem here as well?

Yes, you can. but try to match the ram cards as much the same as possible, as example the same model, Ram manufacturers, SPEED (very inportant) and some forget, latency. you can put different ram stick into the motherboard, but that will increase possible problems in the future
edit: you don't have to worry about if the size is different, that wont effect much 😉
DDR3 and DDR4 are 2 whole different generations. DDR4 is for 2133MHz and bigger, even up to 3600MHz (pretty inpressive). but you dont have to worry with similar problems.
personal hint, go for 2666Mhz, that slight advantage is always a good thing and also stays in your warranty limit of your cpu
😉
ddr3 generation began in the year 2007, this generation is time for ddr4, and even after some years, it is time for ddr5 (if that's possible in the future xD)
