can i play a 1080p hd movie on my 1024x600 resolution laptop? if i connect my laptop to a 1080p hdtv will the output to the tv be 1080p or will it be scaled down?

yes you can play it on your laptop, it will just scaled down. Not sure about external tv, read the manual if it is support higher resolution.

yes you can configure it @ 1080p if its connected via hdmi

My Tv supports 1080p. But i dont have an hdmi port on the latop, if i use the usb port and connect it to the Tv with a usb to hdmi cable will i get a 1080p resolution out put on the TV? my laptop resolution is 1024x600
