can i put core 2 duo on

Straight from HP's web site. I would update the BIOS if the processor isn't recognized.

No. I think the highest it can take is a E6700. I know because we just picked up 3 of them that had P4's in them for cheap and refurbished them. they were the Small Form Factor ones though but the still support the same ones.

Look under Standard Features and Configurable Components

Now i did put a differnt CPU not on the list. It was a E2010 (Pentiuam Dual Core) but i have not tired putting in anything bigger than the E6700. It mainly has to do with the power requirments for the CPU.

Also you need to do a BIOS Update as well to support anything besides a P4 or a Pentium D (Pretty much two P4's Put together). I think the newest one is 2.15 or something like that. You will know if you need to update because if you pop in a C2D baised CPU it will tell you and won't boot.

ok

The E6700 will work in any one. Just if you have the Mini Tower vs the SFF/Desktop model then your upgrade options like PSU and Video card are VERY limited. You can upgrade the PSU in the SFF and you have to use a low profile video card. If you get a nice 600-700 Watt PSU with that E6700 and a decent video card you can play games decntly until you can upgrade. Good thing is if you invest in a nice PSU and a nice GPU you can use those in your next build. The rest of the parts including the case are pointless.

Also find out what version of the BIOS you have. The ones i had came with P4's and were running V1.15. Pentium D's worked fine because Pentium D's are pretty much Two P4's put together with out the HT. A Pentium Dual Core/C2D require an updated BIOS. It took me a while to find it but if you need to update it let me know. I have the latest version on a thumb drive that you can get.

Here is the Bios Update

http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=3232101&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3Didx%253D%257CswItem%253Dvc_90213_1%257CswEnvOID%253D4059%257CitemLocale%253D%257CswLang%253D%257Cmode%253D%257Caction%253DdriverDocument&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

Download and run the file on a different PC. I should extact the files. The easiest way to update is to format a thumb drive as fat32, copy the file U7E_0106.BIN from the file in

C:\swsetup\SP51243\DOS Flash

Then plug in the thumb drive into the 7700. Turn it on, Enter the BIOS. In the first BIOS menu there is a Update BIOS/FIRMWARE. use that, Tell it your getting it from a USB device, it should detect it, and then update it.
