[SOLVED] Can i run a GPU without heatsink and fan?

I bought a Radeon HD 7850 for 1 dollar at some hardware scrap place, its basically totally exposed, no heatisnk or fan, here is the picture:

I have no idea if this GPU works so before deciding to buy proper cooling for it can i run it on my PC for a min or two just to test if it actually works, thanks.

It is probably non functional if it was scrapped.
Likely the cooler was salvaged.
But, you do not have anything invested in it.
I would give it a try. What do you have to lose? 1$??
Direct a fan or cool hair dryer at the chip to get whatever cooling you can during the test.
If you have an electronics store nearby,
you can buy a stick on heat sink like this for not much:

Do not try to run a game or anything graphics intensive.

If you're so sure, why take a chance by operating it without a heatsink?

If you did operate it without one, you should absolutely not try to run any 3D apps and since failure/degradation would be more likely to show itself in 3d mode it's kinda pointless to even try. I'd zip-tie any suitably flat and large hunk of finned metal on it before trying it naked like that.

True enough! the untested part, being obsolete alone is no reason to motherboard.

It's probably worthwhile putting an ohm meter on the appropriate power contacts to assure yourself there's no internal shorts to ground at least.

You are brave plugging that into a working PC. It could do a lot of damage. Motherboard is the least of your worries. PSU going on fire, motherboard and cpu dead. Speaking from experience here, had a gpu take out the psu.

Also it could be fine. Needs a cooler, both heatsink and fan.
