Can I update my ram?

I have an old desktop pc. I'm planning to upgrade my ram from 256 to 512 or better. what should I do first

If u want see a big difference go with 2GB or more.

You should first find what RAM your computer uses (DDR1/2/3), its frequency and how many slots you have left on your board. This is what you need to find out "what" RAM to buy.

I believe CPU-Z can do all of these things under the "Memory" tab.

To find how many RAM slots are free you have to go under the "SPD" I believe.
