I have a Gateway Laptop that has an AMD Turion 64 x2 mobile technology TL-52 1.60 GHz processor. 2 GB Ram. The Socket is Socket S1 (638). I am looking to see if it can be upgraded to run windows 10. This is not my laptop but a friends. It is currently running windows xp. The computer runs just fine right now but he is wanting to keep it and upgrade it to windows 10. If it can be upgraded what CPU can it be upgraded to?

Again, this is likely a waste of time.

Specs for your system.

There's no way you're going to get Windows 10 installed, let alone running well. Points of interest:

2GB RAM Maximum
ATI RS485M motherboard chipset
ATI Xpress 1150 graphics solution
160GB PATA (aka IDE) hard drive
10/100 Ethernet (no Gbit Ethernet)

Based on the Chipset, this thing is from the Windows 2000/XP era. You're not going to find suitable driver support and even if you did AND got a decent processor to run in it, you're still going to be limited by the 2GB of RAM max.

While you may be able to upgrade that processor (not sure if soldered), you would need to upgrade the rest of your system in order to get Windows 10 running well. If you cannot install more than 2GB of RAM, it's pretty much a moot point. Additionally, as with most laptops, driver support usually ends one or two OS versions beyond what it originally came with. I seriously doubt Gateway maintained driver support past Windows 7, let alone all the way to Windows 10.

2GB is indeed bad for Windows now.... was okay in the XP days that is why most people that still use older hardware move to a low resource Linux Distro like Mint Xfce, Linux Light, Bodhi Linux, Lubuntu or Puppy Linux for example. This is about the only way to have good driver support and a usable machine with Windows refusing to support older hardware and discontinuing all OS versions but Win 10.

For common use most of these Distros have a very similar interface to Windows and use far less resources, they would be a much better fit than even Windows 7.
