Thinking about getting a gtx 1080 when the next gen cards drop. currently have an i5 4690k and gtx 970 running on a corsair cx600m power supply. The gtx 970 uses 2 6-pin for power. what will i need for a 1080? what connectors does it use and will i need a better power supply?

Solution
No, simply switching cables is not sufficient - those PSUs use different platforms, although both from CWT. I don't believe the pin "outs" are the same.

FWIW, for the price, a TX650 might be a more economical option:

Thes one I am using requires 8+6pin.
Certain cards like the Zotac GTX1080 AMP requires a 8+8pin.
So it depends on which one u are buying and please do check the spec for power connectors.

Technically u can still use your current power unit.
But keep in mind that CX series is more towards the entry level, so the quality is not as good as other series.
If would say at least grab a TX, or a RM series if you can.

Had this system for about 3 years so i'm might just get a psu as well. looking at this corsair RMx 850x modular. Now the question is if, since they are both Corsair and both modular, if i can just replace the unit and reconnect the connectors or if i will have to do all the wiring again. also thinking about the 750 but that's a CX.
