Ok I have a 70w high pressure sodium dusk-to-dawn security light from 2002 and the bulb went out and I can't find a 70 watt one but I can find a 150 watt one. The light has a mogul base socket. Would a 150w bulb work or would it burn up the ballast?
it burn out the ballast. the older hps amd mh blubs have been banned a few years ago. you may need to call a supply house t osee if they have any stock...if not it time to replace it with a led light. just turn the power off...unwire the power wires and then redo it...put some electrial tape over the new wire nuts. also look at your local power company and dsr web page for rebates. you may be able to replace all of your older lights for free from the power company on a free energy grant. a lot of then will do a free energy audit then say if you replace x lights with leds you cut your bill by x amount. also if you have a large yard see what the cost is to rent a new led flood light from the power company.

You need to check the Maximum watt on the ballast ... as simple as that. it is written on it. if it is lower than 150 watts then replace it .
Well I have 2 of them and the power company put it up on the power pole but they won't fix it it's been 8 months now that they haven't showed up so I tired of waiting on them. The light say 70w max, it's between the barn and chicken houses and I need it to see at night.
