The motherboard in my sisters PC is compatible with 8 GB ddr2 ram and the processor is core 2 duo e4700. Is the processor compatible with 6 or 8 GB of ram or just 4gb?

A GhislainG stated, the real question here is how much RAM your motherboard can support. In your question you mention that your motherboard is compatible with 8gb of RAM, so that should not be a problem.

Note that when buying the ram you should be careful to buy the right number of modules (sticks) for your motherboard. For instance, if your motherboard has 4 memory slots and supports 8gb DDR2, then 4 2gb memory modules would be the way to go. That way you can take advantage of dual channel memory, which provides a modest performance boost. In terms of whether your cpu supports 8gb of RAM, intel's ark does not state how much ram the E4700 can support.

Weird because for most modern cpus they include that information. I also rooted around in the compatible chipsets for the e4700 and many of them do support 8gb of RAM.

To sum it up, if your motherboard chipset can take 8gb of RAM, your e4700 will be able to as well.

All the best for your upgrade!

Hi

If you can find the motherboard make and model then web site of major ram manufacturers such as crucial.com
Will tell you what the RAM upgrade options are available
Crucial has a system information program available for download or
Cpu-Z often gives details about the motherboard and existing ram
