Hi,

I have an old Dell N4050 laptop (that I no longer use and want to put to good use) and it has an internal wireless half mini pcie card. I plan on turning this laptop into a pfSense router and I'm looking into replacing the wireless card with a mini pcie to pcie x1 adapter so that I can plug in a quad nic ethernet controller. I found a few of these adapter online and was wondering if I can use them? I understand that it needs 12V to power up the pcie slot and was wondering if I can use the power from the dvd-rom for this by using maybe a sata to 4pin or sata to molex then molex to 4pin?

Appreciate any advise.

Not sure why you would want to do that, but yes, it has a Mini PCIe connector. As long as you can power it, I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Thanks for the info. I figured it would be cheaper this way. The laptop is energy efficient and the adapter only costs around $10. Although I did find out that the connector for the dvd-rom is not a regular SATA so I won't be able to use a SATA to Molex connector. Did a bit of research and found out it's a sata slimline. I guess I'll need to find a connector for this as well.
