My modem is in the basement, and I want to bring my router in my room on the second floor. Can I use a long ethernet cable (like 25ft) to connect the router to the modem or does the router only work if you connect it with the yellow ethernet that came with it?

Solution
As said, you can use any Cat 5e or better and of any length without signal loss up to about 350 ft. That is why many houses today are built with a place for a modem/router and the cables for the house go from there.
