i recently purchased a hp dl 360 server on amazon which i plan on using as a nas at work, but sas drives get very expensive once you get into reasonable storage sizes for my application, i have read that you can use sata drives on sas back-planes but im wondering if anyone has tried it with this server or product line and if there is anything i should know in advance?

here is a link to the specific server i bought

Standard SATA drives as you are aware, are not designed for Servers on a RAID controller, although you can buy specifically made SATA drives that are "RAID ready" Usually more expensive.

If they are bog-standard SATA drives, you might have to check the bios settings and make sure that the auto hard drive detection is off, or it will possibly pick them up incorrectly.

Aside from that....it should work...you can just expect lower RAID performance...possibly akin to a NAS yes.

The Smart Array controller will support SATA, but the performance will not be as good.

My advise would be to try and pick up some SCSI drives from ebay for it instead. There are usually loads of refurbished drives for sale at decent prices.

i only ask about sata beacuse i have dozens of 2.5' sata drives laying arround, i plan on using the server for a movie/music server in my shop do you think itl suffice? or would using sata drives give me throughput like that of a linksys or dlink nas?
