Can I use XP in very low res modes?

Hi. I'm running emulators through a PC into a Sony BVM-20E1E (1000 scanline) professional CRT monitor.

I can see the desktop in 640x480 and higher no problem but the screen buzzes. The only way to stop this is to set the resolution width to 240 (I can go all the way up to 1280 height) and then the picture becomes stable. Unfortunately. The windows are very stretched and go off screen making it more or less impossible to navigate.

I'm not sure if this flickering will damage the monitor in the long run so I tend to try and get out of XPs desktop as soon as I can by firing up an emulator.

Question: Is there a way to change or tweak XPs desktop, folders, windows and text etc to run in an ultra low res mode with a max width of 240?

I don't care what it looks like; it could be white text and boxes on a black back ground for all I care, just as long as I can navigate?

Cheers
Tony

Check the refresh rate you are on, and make sure it matches what the monitor will work at. Adjusting it may help, I've seen issues when it was set to 60 due to electrical interference from wires behind the wall, but work fine at 75.
