Hi i'm just wondering if anybody knows if my 250 W psu can run an upgraded Nvidia card?
My current graphics is an integrated nvidia 6150se 3d with 128 mb of shared memory.
My system is

Compaq Presario SR5240AN
AMD Athlon 64 x 2 dual core 4600+, 2.4 ghz
3 GB DDR2 ram
Nvidia 6150se 3d with 128 MB shared memory
PSU 250 watts Max, 14 Amps on 12 V rail
1 Empty PCI-E slot

windows experience scores are

processor 4.9, ram 4.8 and graphics 3.

I don't really want to upgrade the psu and have a card that is way better than my processor, i'd just like to upgrade the card so it will be a little more game friendly until i can afford to get a new system.
Please be kind with your replies :hello:

Based on the review, the HD 5570 consumed a maximum of 20w under gaming conditions.

That's not excessive for a 250w PSU. The other components in the OP's PC are not power hogs.
I have here a 580 watts PSU case with problems in HD5770 that i managed to solve only with 2 Molex to pci-e connection on the card:

The job is done the boy is happy and play games and in the end this is only think that counts. You risking putting him in troubles that I personally can’t solve with his psu.

stay on issues of OP.
haven't you learned anything from being burned all day.?
I'm not going back and forth with you and DO NOT private message me.
immature and ignorant..

Your issue was me and i did post these sites if you telling I’m wrong then you claim they are also wrong.

To write something like this in this thread i bet they had a good reasons (to help the op?) the other one claimed he knows only the high end cards i may say he missed a SPOT.

Mousemonkey I’m dying to tell us their reasons.

i guess my computer would be proof that a HD5570 can run off a 250w power supply. im using a dell inspiron 530s and upgraded from a HD2400 pro to the 5570. the power supply has 17a on the 12v rail which is more then the 14a the poster has.

It was a sarcasm :)

I heard 5570 were good for low wattage psu's, althought a 250watts psu that cost probably 2 $ to create will probably blow up after a short time.

I'd get an antec 380 watts for 40$ and a 5570 if I was you.

I think one thing that is being missed in this constant feud, is that not all 400w, 500w...etc are the same. I believe the manufacturers overestimate the needed wattage, to compensate for some of the lower end PSUs, that rate themselves as higher wattage than they actually can support.

The actual power consumption of the 5770, isn't going to require a 400w PSU.

you have a few options at the power supply size, more than you think but not too many.
there are several options rated with 300 watt minimums that you CAN run with no issues.

first i would like to know if your processor is a brisbane or windsor model athlon.?
what games and at what resolution are you playing them at.?

i will admit it's a weak power supply but I have my reasons why it will work for example:
i just upgraded a compaq presario sr2030nx with a 240 watt power supply
it now has a 65nm chip, full RAM set and older 8600GT running on the stock power supply.

video card minimum requirements were based on an outdated scale that generalized usage of processors running at 65 and 90nm.
most of today's cpu are now more efficient than that.

with that being said, you do have options.

It's a 2.4 GHZ which i believe makes it a Windsor.

The games would be Assassins Creed, Bioshock, Resident Evil Etc,
Resolution either 1920 X 1080 or 1400 X 900.

What about GT 240 or 220 ? they both say minimum power 300 W, where the Radeon's say 400 W.
