so first off, i have an intel i5 4430 with 3.00 ghz and was wondering if it will run the gfx card at a reduced speed or if the gtx 970 will run fine?

you should consider gigabyte g1 gaming if you can afford it and if you can fit it on your case, runes the coolest of all.

eventually im going to upgrade, the only reason i bought this pc was i found it on ebay at a really good price lol, its a lenovo k450. i wouldnt go for prebuilt but the specs made me lol, it was 330$ i made a post on here a few weeks ago with the specs, its called "is this a good deal?" the specs made it an almost 300$ deal if i had bought the parts new, just wanted to share my story if you were interested

I see no reason to upgrade your cpu,you will see small or close to none gains if you upgrade to,let's say i5 4690k,with yoir i5 4430 and GTX 970 you will be able to max out every game for the next two years(almost every games, cause optimization sucks these days).

so in a couple of years when the gtx 970 is a bit outdated should i just get a new motherboard and do sli?

if you try running at 4k then it will be a bottlenech otherwise not.

There's no such thing as future proof. Nobody here can tell you how long a graphics card will last with any certainty. I recommend that you get the best graphics card you can get now and use it until it's no longer meeting your needs. When will that be though? Nobody can say for sure because obviously nobody here can see the future. I can give you an estimate though. A GTX 970 will probably be good for another 3 years at least maybe longer if you stick with 1080p.
