I have a Ga 990fxa ud3 now rev under cpu-z it has 2 spots one says rev. 02 and right under it says rev.40 so do I have the 4.0 model? Also my psu is evga 750w Modular Gold. I know I'm going to need water cooling for this what do you guys recommend? My case is a cougar mx300 doesnt allow for a 240mm rad I believe.

Solution
Then Skylake is more modern, but more expensive. The i7 I suggested is still good for the next five years or so.

As proof as futures get at the moment (but they are always making more future)

The revisions pulled from the mobo maker's website are 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 3.0, 4.0, 4.1, so you'd have the 4.0 model. The 9590's on the supported processors list as long as you have BIOS version F3 or higher. You should be able to use a 240mm rad in the front, top, or side of the case, just not the back. What's your budget for the cooler?

Yes, it will support that CPU:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4672#

But, you really don't want to buy it. The AMD FX-9000 CPUs are well known to overheat, consume way too much power and cost more. If you need more performance and are stuck on that motherboard and can't afford to upgrade to a new Intel system, then you should just buy an AMD FX-8000 CPU and overclock it. Chances are, if you can keep it cool you will reach the same clock speeds with similar or lower power consumption.

As above the fx-8350 is a great cpu and some people have managed to overclock to around 4.9-5.0ghz. Although this is complete luck of the draw as 2 cpu's can overclock completely different.

I'm on F2 Version. If I go 8350 will I see a big jump from a 6300? My fps are droping to high 30's while playing games. I have a lepa lpalv12 with 2 120mm on it so I think i should be able to go to 4.5 on the 8350 and keep good temps? Btw My Gpu is a Msi gtx 970 100me.

If you already have an FX 6300, you would see a performance boost going with an FX-8000 CPU, but it would be fairly small. The CPUs have the same cache and can hit about the same clock speeds, so you only gain two additional cores that won't be utilized by most games.

If you really feel you need an upgrade, save up about $400 and spring for a new Intel motherboard, Core i5 and some DDR4. That will get you a much more significant performance increase.

You might also look at upgrading your GPU. Not sure what GPU you currently have, but it may be holding you back more than your CPU.

I just got a MSI GTX 970 100ME So I know it's not the gpu. I was told the CPU is bottle necking my GPU.

If the CPU is limit your system, and you have an overclocked FX6300, a FX8350 or 9590 is not going to be a huge improvement for gaming, mostly only the difference in clock speed better, and you will get less than half of that as an improvement in FPS (10% faster clock will give less than 5% more FPS).

I do not consider the FX 9590 to be a viable solution to your problem (or any problem, for that matter)

What do I need to get if I wanted to go intel? Btw wouldn't i7 be better then i5 which do I get 6700k? I Don't think my case will even hold an intel MB. MX 300 cougar. I don't have my windows install so how would I go about switching that over without having to buy windows 10 again?

Easily. It will take any standard motherboard from ATX down.

Skylake is about 5% faster than Haswell at the same clock speed. I'd consider a budget Haswell system.

Decent and cheap.

Hardly any more than a FX9590. The Intel is locked but that is a standard basic choice for good gaming.

Decent budget choice that can be overclocked.

You could spend up to another $100 for a really good motherboard.

What's your PSU?

You can go cheaper than that on Skylake.

You don't need an aftermarket cooler for a Skylake build, the one Intel includes will be fine. You won't be able to overclock with it, but you can get the basic build then buy a cooler later when you want to overclock. The Core i5 is already a major jump up in performance for you compared to the FX 6300, and you really don't need to go any higher. The i7-6700K does have better performance and will last longer because Hyper-Threading extends the performance significantly, but it all depends on your budget. This build isn't as good as the one recommended by DonkeyOatie in terms of performance, but it still has a decent quality motherboard, a high performance CPU, and an alright RAM kit so if you don't have too much cash, this build is probably best.

If you do have the extra cash to toss into it, DonkeyOatie's skylake build suggestion is better, just more expensive.

Two points.

Every part I suggest in my builds is one that I would use myself in the OP's circumstance. If I have to use a different part that I would not normally select (too expensive or needs to be more robust), I'll say so. The motherboard I suggested is about the cheapest board good enough for the future.

The future is a long time. In addition to more demanding games, I need to consider changes in application. We live in fast changing times, so any futureproof system must be heavy VR capable (based on very little information) and needs to be able to handle things like VR streaming and recording and the possibility that the OP may get into new areas of interest, like animation or rendering. Until the OP cries UNCLE over the budget, that means an i7 CPU. If Broadwell-E were released, I would have suggested that too, as about the most futureproof systems possible soon.

Thank you for all the help one last question for you what do you think of this MB compared to the one you linked? http://www.microcenter.com/product/452669/GA-Z170XP-SLI_LGA_1151_ATX_Intel_Motherboard
