Hello, I really want to purchase a 1080 for running games very smooth and clean, but I don't know if my mid-tier PC can even handle it. If not, what else do I need to upgrade in order to use the 1080? Thanks in advance.

then yes, you also need to buy another psu to power the gpu a decent 550w with the proper pcie cables

if the mobo is standard 24-pin then you only need that

if not

both the new psu for the gpu ( a good 350w with the proper pcie cables ) and the power brick for the mobo

be aware that the i5 4460 is not good enough for a gtx 1080 at 1080p, so an i7 is also recommended

it has a power adapter, so all i need is a new power supply?

You can't use a conventional PSU in that PC. it is not designed for that. And I doubt there is a bigger power adapter available. The GTX 1080 is out of the question.
