can my psu and graphics config work

i have an hp pavillion a6683w and want to use bfg tech nvidia geforce 8600 gt i also have an old psu from my old gateway 400w i was wondering if this would not fry my motherboard if i put a higher watt psu in thanks in advance

SugarPsycho is waffling, ignore it.
PSU is measured by its MAX output.
So the bigger the MAX the more it can output. Rule of thumb is to try and double you actual use, so it can give more power if it has to.
Generally, most people don't need more than 650W and from your system I think a 550W would be fine. Just buy Quality for price, not cheap unknown brands.

A higher wattage will not fry anything it is just how much power the PSU can output, what will fry your motherboard or parts is different amps and voltages HOWEVER these are all already set to a certain standard across the board so you should not have to worry about it.

They will be fine there is an industry standard. Unless you have a faulty PSU and faulty wires they will work exactly like your last PSU. There are three primary voltage rails inside of the power supply: +3.3V, +5V and +12V. And the amps are the same across everything.
