can not change notification sound on samsung galaxy j1

i have a samsung galaxy j1.

i like to change the notification sound but my phone simple does not let me. i have tried as instructed in the manual and even checked online, but none of them work.

i have tried going to the settings app, even tried changing it through my messaging app. i also tried selecting the tune in its folder and set it as a notification but only options available are for ringtones.

generally, as instructed, the result is different. it says go to the settings app:
1. click on sound
2. click on ringtones
3. select notification
4. select the tune you want
5. press OK.

the problem with me is, that it stops at step 4. instead of getting a selection, i end up seeing a screen full of folders titled: /storage/emulated/0
even then when i select a tune, it just drops back to step 3 with no change what so ever.
i had the same issue when i have tried to change the ringtone. but i was bale to change it after selecting the track i want from the its folder and set it as a ringtone.

i have really no idea what i can do here. im not very good with these phones.

have you got single sim or dual sim version? the instructions seem to differ based on which one you have

I have an S7, the menus are all different for me. I expect I can do it, but cannot see an easy way to set my own notification apart from the normal ring tones, it might need me to download one first.

yep, mine instruction tell me the same thing too but is not working for me. regardless what tune i choose.

Seems instructions are a lie

seems you have to manually copy the files from sd card into the notifications folder before they will show up. See here:

It shows ringtones but if you notice, notifications folder is just under ringtones on phone so I assume you just move them there and then go to set notification and the one you want will be in list.

thanks but its nto working either. i do have the tone i want in the notification folder.
i have tried to delete this whistling tone but for some odd reason i cant find it at all. i have checked every folder i could access and nothing. only the other tunes but not this whistling one.

well, i have tried this ringtone setter and this actually worked. now i hear the tone i want instead of this aggravating whistle tone. so thinks for the help. much better now.
