When I install Corel Paint Shop Pro 4 in Windows 8, the installation succeeds but when you click on the icon to start the program, It will not run. There is no way I can get it to run. I tried installing Corel Paint Shop Pro 3 and got the same results.

Try it in compatibility mode or use it on window 7. The company making the software will not provide you any support on window 8 at this stage and I am just exploring window 8 this stage so I have no other clue appart from applying window 7 knowledge on window 8.

"Can not run Corel Paint Shop Pro 4 in Windows 8"
Sorry but it made me laugh, I just hope the OP didn't pay for his version of Windows 8.

How can it??? It's an OS in the Making..... it's not supposed to be running all the Apps that are already out there. If it could, it wouldn't be under development it would be the finished product right?

Actually, windows 8 was not able to run a few programs. However, considering this is a dev preview - not running a copy of adobe was the very least of my worries. MetroUI is.

That being said, I look forward to the UI on a tablet and 7 on my desktop :)

Hmmm, you don't say. :sarcastic:

At least we know, for what it's worth at this point.
Heck I didn't even know anyone still used Corel! Haven't had files submitted for publication or proofing in Corel for about, oh, maybe 7 or 8 years!

I can run neither Paint Shop Pro 3 nor Paint Shop Pro 4 in the Windows 8 beta. They both fail with the same symptoms: the cursor spins for a few seconds, then nothing--no error dialogs, no popups, nothing.

I've contacted support hoping for help but--hey, this is a surprise!--they said "At this time we cannot offer any advice on how to run Paint Shop on Windows 8 preview edition." So, thanks but no thanks.

I'm enjoying my PSPx4 CD; it's serving very well as a coaster. Since they never fixed that stupid PSPx3 copy and paste bug, I'm kind of running out of enthusiasm for chasing this particular screw-up.

BTW, after using Win8 for some time now, I've definitely come to feel the Metro portion is definitely behaving like a start menu: I'm spending all my time on the normal Desktop, and I use that start panel only to start new programs. The UI switch is a little jarring for that purpose, but compared to the cramped start menu previously I can't say I think they're entirely in the wrong. Plus, it does provide a nice continuity for tablet/phone UIs.

I have the same problem. Tried compatibility mode and it doesn't work either. I posted on Corel's user forums and got a bunch of snarky responses. I wonder if it has something to do with Corel not updating X4 to a 64 bit app. I'm running 64 bit Windows 8, but it did work on 64 bit Windows 7. It's the only program I use regularly that doesn't run on Win 8. I hate to go back just for this one program. I've been using PS Essentials for now.

It doesn't surprise me Corel isn't responsive to your email, but you would think they would be concerned their newly released program doesn't run on Windows 8. I know it's early, but "We are working on it." would be a much better response.

For whatever it's worth, I've got PSP X --the original X, not X2/X3/X4-- running on my Windows 8 machine. I've been unable to use PSP X3 or X4 on this machine; haven't tried X2.

@jmadara
Really?? You'd hate to go back because of one program??? Didn't you know this is a Developer Release, which itself means it ain't the final...... and certainly not here to stay.....
You got all your programs on it so that after 2 months you can go back to using Win7 until they release the RTM???
No... Corel is not going to be more sensible in saying we're working on it, they'd be more stupid by putting their foot in their mouths if they said that.
Corel and MS aren't Telepathic Twins..... they ain't even daughters of the same father.... or mother....
The day MS releases Win8, the Official RTM, within a week, other software makers will launch official patches for their softwares to make them functional with the new OS or they will release new versions specially for the OS.

Yeah dude, thanks for the not helpful post. PSPx4 is something I use nearly every day. My intent of the post was to see if others had the same problem and maybe had a solution. It's the only program I have that doesn't run on Win8. I'm beta testing a new Corel product and it works file in Win8.

I'm not bashing MS or Corel for every program not working. If you can't be part of the solution or offer something positive, I say good day to you.

too soon for all that..
who uses Corel still anyways.... :pfff:
if on desktop then go back to win 7 and wait for win 8 to get out of development
and buy a tablet with win 8 on it.
as for laptops and desktops now, win 7..

Win8 isn't a huge jump from Win7. Metro being the bigeat change. And you what? It works. I really would like to see Win8 on a pressure sensitive tablet with a stylus option. Kind of like a Wacom.

Win8 boots up int 7 seconds on my rig......... from a standard HDD SATAII.
Just check what time windows 7 takes........
Installation took under 5 minutes...... compare with win7
The startup and launching of programs and an OS itself tell you how different it is from it's predecessor.
No major difference between Win7 and Win8 other than the GUI......LMAO
You're breaking the MS Developer Teams Heart and really actually pissing on their hardwork.

How many Win7 versions came out before the final one??? and then how many final versions came out before a fully all system capable one was finally released.

I am not a MS fan at all, but, what I have seen in this Developer Edition has made me apologize on ten different sites for what the Pre Deve. Release screens had made us feel.
They have not just changed the GUI, but the code optimization has been mastered to such an extent , that any CPU feels that it was tailor made...... that is one big leap.... try installing Win7 on a first gen Pentium and see hw it works, now install this Win8 release on the same and see it work...... hopefully you'll see beyond the GUI.

You really shouldn't be able to run any software in Windows 8 beta....especially seeing as how no Beta has been released yet. The Windows 8 Developer Preview is actually an Alpha release....but you'd know that if you actually took the time to read prior to downloading and installing it.

If you rely that heavily on Paint Shop Pro, you should be using Windows7 and not an ALPHA release of Windows8....but that's just common sense there.

According to the event viewer it looks like an issue with the mfc90u.dll. I will do some more research!

Hi all!

Installing SP1 for X4 available free from the Corel website solves this problem.
I am currently running Windows 8 Consumer Preview x64 and PaintShop Pro X4.

Geoff.

Thanks for the 'heads up'. I can confirm that PSP X4 runs OK on W8 CP x64 after installing PSP X4 SP1
