Can older windows 7 key be used for a new install?

I want to do a fresh install of windows 7 on an SSD for a new pc i'm building. I've been using an asus laptop that came with an OEM windows 7 without any physical disks but with the product key on the bottom of the laptop. Is it possible for me to reuse that key somehow via phone activation or another method for a fresh install on another computer?

You will need an install disk from Asus. You can also image the drive and clone it to the SSD.

No. Read the EULA. OEM copy stays with your hardware.

I misunderstood your question. You cannot use the licence on a whole new PC.

Short answer is no.

Long answer is no because, although the laptop is not actually activated with the supplied key, the OS is preactivated. The supplied key on the base of your laptop is tied to Asus custom bioses only and wouldn't activate on any other motherboard bios.
