Can putting motherboard cpu socket plastic protector bend the pins?

I'm sending mobo for RMA, never done this before, shop installed the board so don't know how to put the black cap back on...

Looked at Youtube, looked at owner's manual, couldn't find anything clear, so I put it the wrong way (today I found out how to put it on by trying to put it on the outside...not on the inside..)

Now the pins are bent...could putting the cap on the wrong way cause that? Or the pins were broken already?

Yes, I thought the protector was like an empty cpu dummy widget...sealed, so no dust could get under...

Like a CPU substitute part, placeholder

Not yet, the shop installed the board for me, they build the system, the HDMI port is toast, AsROck knows about it, they say they'll give me a new board, so they might overlook the bent pins?

The plastic socket cover mounts onto the metal CPU retaining bracket. So I suppose you could bend the socket pins trying to put the plastic cover under the CPU retaining bracket. You could bend pins by simply dropping the plastic cover on the pins. Something like dragging the corner edge of the plastic cover across the pins could bend them as well.

Man, I doubt it. They are going to see the protective cover on wrong and assume the bent pins may have contributed to the damaged HDMI port. But if the board is at Asrock now, it's out of your hands anyway, isn't it?

Actually, the HDMI port doesn't work straight from the port, can wiggle it to make it work, so obviously not the pins, board is still with me, I don't want to try to power the PC on in fear of frying the CPU...

If there are no instructions in the owners manual, do you think I have a case with AsRock?

Actually, page 12 and 13 of the manual show how installing the cpu and closing the lid pops the cap off. It also shows that the cap was on the outside of the cover. So no, I doubt you have a case. Why not give Asrock Support a call or just contact them and nicely explain this situation to them. They may offer a solution that won't cost you a new board.

Yes, I saw that, but the colors are grey, black and white, it's not very clear, photos would be better, all the other instructions for RAM etc... are clear, but for that it's a little ambigous...
