can see wifi networks but can't connect

Ive plugged in a usb wifi adapter, I made sure to install the drivers, I try to connect to my wifi and I get 'windows cannot connect to [network name]'

Its not a router issue as several other wifi enabled devices in my house are fine, its not the adapter, I tested it in another pc. I tried connecting my pc to my laptop via ethernet and sharinf the connection and that worked, so id necessary ill buy an ethernet bridge but would rather get my wifi functional. Ive tried searching this forum and found no answers. Any ideas?

You didn't include enough detail on the usb wifi adapter you are using, or which version of windows you are on.

Have you tried setting up a static IP address and then connecting? I assume you are using the windows wireless utility to connect?
The model of the usb wifi adapter and the version of windows would help me tremendously. What version of windows was the machine that worked

The issue may be driver related, or you may have a corrupted install on the machine you are trying it from. I don't have enough information.

While the adapter itself may not be physically broken, there may be specific issues or lack of compatibility with it in certain cases.

The actual model of the adapter im unsure of but it uses this driver http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads1/downloads/usb i bought it a while back and it's incredibly generic so I can't give an exact model number, since there isn't one anywhere on it.

The machine I'm trying to fix aswell as the machine I tested it on are windows 7, and I've tried reinstalling windows as well.

have you tried different usb ports? were you closer to the router with the machine that worked? what is the signal strength of the network you are attempting to connect to? Also clear any connection profile windows makes for the wireless network or it may try to reuse bad settings/etc

lol I stopped by sketchy peripherals that require drivers. I got one with a manual so badly translated from Chinese it was funny(and illegible)
