Your build is OK, but it makes no sense to use a 7th Gen Intel anymore on a new build. Also you didn't have any storage included and the GPU is way overpriced and you can get a faster one for less money. I agree with Mandark in that your friend is wrong and AMD Ryzen is an excellent CPU.
This build is one that will last for a long time.

The new version is better, but I wouldn't get that SSD. If you are going to go with a SATA SSD save some money and use the WD Blue or Crucial MX500. Otherwise spend the extra $30 and go with the Intel 660p at 1TB. The RAM isn't anything special and you are paying a lot of extra money for RGB when the Crucial Ballistix Sport LT is $30 cheaper and has better timings. Antec PSUs aren't as good as they used to be. You would be better off with the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold or EVGA SuperNoca G3.

Well half wrong. The FX and Bulldozer CPUs were awful at one point (and there was the FX-9590, widely regarded as one of the worst CPUs ever made). But since the advent of Ryzen they have been great with the first and second generations.

Slightly faster ram and no expensive windows 10 - which you can buy reliably online a lot cheaper.
Can save $40 by using a 2600 instead of 2600x
