I think i found the highest end GTX 970 on the market in the Zotac GeForce GTX 970 4GB AMP Extreme Core Edition GPU. Can this GPU potentially outperform the stock, non factory overclocked GTX 980? At $370 vs. $500 it is a very tempting buy. If it is or is not capable of outperforming a GTX 980, by how much? A little? A lot? Please let me know.

The difference between the stock GTX 970 and stock GTX 980 is ~12%. The Zotac AMP Extreme Core edition has a factory overclock of 1203 MHz/1355 MHz boost. That's a 14% increase over the stock GTX 970 at 1051 MHz. Therefore, the Zotac AMP Extreme should be about an insignificant 2% faster than a stock GTX 980.

By the way, the Zotac AMP Extreme (non-Core edition) has a higher factory overclock at 1228 MHz.

GTX 980s overclock quite well too. It may outperform a reference 980 though. The 980 will be better at higher resolutions.
