Is there any way my mobo could have been fried, since i tried with an old quality psu (500w xtech). I did it cuz i was desperate to tried out since my cooler master 750w got broken

When i turn it by putting the 24 pins cable and 4 pins on processor the mobo start spinning the fan for like 5 seconds and then stopped working and i smell like bad
and smell like burn from the psu i believe the psu fried. but mobo smell was ok. is there any change my mobo has got broken? i put it with the i3 4170k processor, and a vengeance 4gb ram. No GPU on it...im really concern cuz im planning to buy a new PSU

Specs:

Mobo: H97 pro4 ASrock .
I3 4170k 3.7ghz
Vengance 4gb
r7260x sapphire.

PS: I think i was so noob to do such a risk movement

With a cheapo generic PSU like that it could have damaged the motherboard and anything else in the system that it powers. Wont know for sure this you get a better PSU. The PSU is a very important part and quality is just as crucial as size.
