Maybe I'm not geek enough, but what would be the practical/medical purpose and/or reason for doing this?

The article only mentioned "science" as the reason for the OP for doing it.

Farther down they were talking about applications where you could use it to navigate yourself through a house or maybe more.

Putting it in the blind and having magnetic strips everywhere would be an interesting idea.
