can you have 2 different brands of ram in a motherboard

If you have 8GB of RAM then adding 4GB more will not help anything unless you are massively multitasking or running a multiple VM environment. Honestly if you have 4GB that's plenty for most situations. Why do you think you need more RAM? If you are looking for gaming performance don't waste your money on RAM, you need a better GPU.

Can you? Yes. Will it work? Maybe. The faster stick will by default run at the voltage, speed and timings of the slowest stick. Mixing and matching memory can cause all kinds of problems so I would do an 8 to 10 hour run of memtest after installing to make sure there are no errors.

It still may or may not work. Your best bet is to match voltage, latency and speeds but even 2 different kits from the same brand can have different sub timings. There are only a few companies that make DRAM like Samsung, Elpida, Hynix, Micron etc. So you could buy 2 different 1.5v DDR3 1600 kits from GSkill and get RAM modules in one made by Elpida and modules in the other from Powerchip. While it would probably work together the sub timings that aren't user adjustable may very well be slightly different.

Matching speed, voltage and latency will most likely work although I would still use memtest to make sure it isn't throwing errors.

I'm going to just assume the ebay link to used shoes was a screw up?

Why are you adding RAM? You have the 4GB of Gskill now and are thinking about adding the 8GB of AData? It's much easier to help someone when they take 2 seconds to explain the problem. System specs?

As I said above, will they work together? Maybe. There is no way of knowing on your specific system until you try it and run an 8 to 10 hour pass of memtest to make sure there are no errors. I can't be more specific than that.
