i have recently run into this same problem. cant read blank discs, but burnt discs are read fine. i was burning a good number of discs for some friends. on the sixth disc, it wouldnt read the blank discs anymore. the previously burnt discs are readable but these blanks ones arent. same brand, same pack.

:bounce: Until the disc is formatted Windows will not know that it is there.

CDs and DVD are optical media, not magnetic like floppy discs and hard drives. So, you have to use a separate software package to format and write to a recordable CD or DVD. This software tells your computer how to use your DVD writer to burn a disc.

Your drive (assuming it is a reader/writer and not just a reader) should have come with burning software. Nero is the most popular. I use Roxio ED CD/DVD Creator. Others swear by Sonic. They all have their +s and -s.

Problems with a known good CD rw can be fixed by a little registry fix. The CD will appear dead until you do the reset. Look up the parameter in either Google or the Microsoft Knowledge Base. for Registry Fix Upper and Lower filters. Reset the parm. and reboot machine. The Drive will work fine. I have used this on several customer machines that had been declared dead by other techs. Bob Matevich rmatevich@thesoftwareworks.com

:hello: I discovered that there is a difference in the "+" and the "-" writable discs. My burner will only burn the CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and the DVD-RW. It will not burn the CD+R, CD+RW, DVD+R nor the DVD+RW. There is a difference in the format of the plus" blank discs from the "minus" blank discs. " I took the plus discs back to the store and exchanged them for the minus and now the blank discs are burning....no problem. 😉
