ISSUE SOLVED
My receiver was not able to output a 4K signal so I plugged the PC straight into the TV and just routed the TVs audio back to the receiver with an optical audio cable. Works like a charm.

Hello.

I just purchased an Toshiba 4K TV, and have my PC connected to it via HDMI. It's all set up, and I have it on game mode (necesarry for using it as a PC monitor lag free). I should mention it's connected via the GPU to the TV, not the on-board graphics.

I can't seem to get it to change the resolution in the Nvidia control panel. The highest resolution I see is 1920*1080. I've tried adding a custom resolution with downsampling, but when I press test, the screen just goes black and reverts back to 1080p after 10 seconds.

I'm sure there is a proper way to get the resolution I want, but I am probably missing something.

Hardware I am using:
GPU: Nvidia GTX 960 SSC
TV: Toshiba 55L621U
Connection type: HDMI

Other info: Displayport not available on TV.

UPDATE: I just thought of something. I am running the PC with HDMI through an old Sony receiver I bought about 6 years ago. Could it be the receiver that's causing an issue with the resolutions? Maybe it doesn't support anything higher than 1080p?

Solution
You definately need to buy a HDMI cable that specifically says 2.0 on it, but like i said, any cable should push 4k @ 30hz.

AAAND i just saw your edit.

YES! totally the receiver!! instead pass it to the TV and send your audio back to the receiver from the TV's audio outs, that should clear it up!

Hi Greens.

The TV has 3 HDMI ports and 1 USB port. sort of a budget TV with not many features. It does have a 60hz refresh rate and since it's 4K UHD I'm assuming it's using HDMI 2.0 hardware.

I hope it's that and it's not a bad TV / GPU. I am going to try and bypass the receiver today when I get home and will come back with an update whether it is solved. Thank you.

I bought some 18.0Gbps cables today. Excited to test em out later.

I've got fibe at 30Mbps. I THINK that's sufficient. I'm more interested in gaming at super high res more that streaming though. When I praise the sun in Dark Souls I want to FEEL the sun.

ohhhh you might be spending a good chunk on a GTX 1080 in the near future.
