laptop was working and was turned off for a couple of months. now cannot access internet. was set up with a static ip address. when I couldn't get connected I tried to switch it to dhcp. The error message I am getting is unable to contact dhcp server. The connection to the router seems to be working - just can't get an ip address. I've tried for 4 hours now - ipconfig releasing, resetting, changing my wireless adapter settings, rebooting. Please help!!!

can't ping the router. can't ping google.com. ipconfig /all on problem pc shows windows ip config node type as unknown. don't know what that means but my other pcs don't show this.

I was not able to access your link (webpage not found). But after searching, I found what I think you are suggesting:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
So I did this and rebooted. After this, it took a long time to acquire an ip address starting with 169... with limited or no connectivity, then continued on to acquire my previously assigned static ip address 192.168.1.102, but still no internet.

I was searching around (from my other pc) and found a suggestion on booting into safe mode with networking. I was able to do this and browse the internet fine. I took the opportunity to download Chrome at this time to see if it was just Int Explorer, but I couldn't browse with Chrome either.

I also tried doing a system restore with 3 different checkpoints. They all went through the motions but with an end result of incomplete, nothing has changed after the reboot came back. I noted that the only changes in the history were all windows type updates - nothing that would make me think a software with a virus. But you never know.

I am considering re-installing Windows (I have the disk) to see if that helps.

I will await your reply first though. Hopefully some of this info will lead you in the right direction for a solution. I don't know how to interpret these findings. Thank you again so much for your help!!

Addition (on Saturday) - This was looking more and more like a windows problem. So instead of re-installing win xp, I decided to upgrade to win 7. I had planned to do this for a while now, and so this problem just prompted me to proceed. Anyway, my internet is now working under win 7.

Thank you again for your assistance. You helped me immensely in troubleshooting this problem.
