Since I can't connect from the office, I tried a simple connection at home
between 2 XP PCs on the back of the same router. I enter either the IP
address of the 'remote' PC or the computer name and get "The client could not
connect to the remote computer". I have disabled Norton Internet Security and
can ping in both directions. Connections are enabled at the remote end. I can
see the remote PC in My Network Places. If I use <browse for more> in Remote
Desktop Connection and click on the workgroup, I receive "The
domain/workgroup does not contain any terminal servers"
I'm obviously missing something simple but can't think of it. Any ideas
would be very much appreciated.

Hi David,

What version of Windows XP are you using?

Only XP professional supports remote desktop connections.

As Gary McDonald mentions, you need XP Pro. You must have enabled Remote
Desktop on the remote tab of properties of my computer--oh--I think you need
to reboot after enabling this?

The browsing failure is normal--there's a regedit required to allow XP Pro
machines to show up.

Bill,

There is no need to reboot when you check (enable) or uncheck (disable) Remote Desktop in the Remote
tab properties... Its simply a on/off switch function...

Thanks - I wasn't sure how that works. I know that the Terminal Services
service isn't stoppable, and I wasn't sure whether it started when you
checked off the feature.

(I s'pose in many cases it is running already since I think RA is on by
default, and switch-user as well.)
