Hello all,

I'm new here, but heard you guys might be able to help.

My problem is my computer will not download large files, from any browser. By large, I mean files over like 500 MB. My other computer on the same network does just fine. The problem computer is a dell inspiron laptop just over yr old, running windows 8. I rebooted my router and modem to no avail. I did two system resets (not restore, but complete wipes) on this computer. The problem still persists. I purchased and installed Bitdefender antivirus 2015, but nothing was found. I'm at my wits end here.

I'd really appreciate a helping hand.

Thanks.

Well I will you give you this. This is the first time I have heard a problem like it but I haven't been here for a while so.

From what your saying it doesn't sound like its a router issue or an internet speed issue.
You could try reinstalling Windows or just install Linux for the hell of it try to download some files over 500mb.

Do you download them by utorrent or what?

Ps wasting money on an antivirus is Bs imho.

Ah, great question. I should have mentioned this: I can download files w/ UTorrent rapidly (as usual). It is only the browsers that slow to a crawl and stop completely. If its a smaller, say 50 MB file, it'll download fast and completely. Only when its a large file anywhere over about 300 MB, will it fail. I checked my download speeds. I get 55 megabits per second down, and 25 mbits per second up.

As for reinstalling Windows, Ive done to system resets, which basically reinstalls windows. No success.

Thanks for the reply. Any ideas?

I remembered today that some days ago I had the same problem when I tried to download WoW from my browser.Well I had no idea what what caused the drop it went from 2mb to 20 kb.

Anyway I downloaded Auslogic Boost speed.Basically what the software does is to optimize the settings for your current set up.
So when I tweaked the setting on the Mozilla it fixed it

Did you try installing Linux. If its a weak notebook you could try Linux lite(sorry if I mislead you on the name)just to check if its a software problem

Speedtest.net says my download speed is 59.14 Mbps. Utorrent works fine. Browsers however download everything slowly. Even after a system reset. It doesn't make any sense.

Hmmm, okay, I'll google ftp client and see what I can find. If not I'll look at what linux has to offer and see if it makes sense to put it on my laptop.

THANKS A LOT FOR TRYING MAN.

In addition to the symptoms described in my original statement, I just realized that if Im downloading large files (1-2 gigs or so), my browsing slows drastically. Those two downloads in utorrent however still go fast as ever.

Hey USAFRet,

Here's the problem:

My web browsers all download files very slowly. (Whats odd is before last month my downloads were rocket fast, and my laptop is about one year old.)
Files over 200 MB usually ultimately fail to complete downloading (though sometimes I get lucky).
I can still download files w/ UTorrent very fast, as usual.
Optimum customer support and speedtest.com confirm my speeds are normal. (about 55 megabits per second down, and 25 mbits per second up.)

Ive tried so far:
2 system resets
Bitdefender Anti Virus premium edition
Ad Aware
Auslogics

Still, my browsers download at CRAWL speeds, whereas my computer is otherwise VERY fast.

Thanks for the reply. Any ideas?

Hey Paul,

I only downloaded Bitdefender after this problem occured, so I'm fairly certainly isn't the cause of the problem.

Good idea,

Looking through so far I see 1 thing that looks kinda weird to me (that may be harmless) or could be some kind of malware disguised as a regular operation.

It reads, exactly as written:

"persistence Module" First word lower case, second upper case

I'll close it out and see if it reinitiates itself. If not I'll try to download something and see if it made a difference.
I'll try that with any suspicious looking apps I see running.

I there a way I can provide a full list of my apps w/o screenshotting ten times? Id love to show you guys what Im looking at.

I just downloaded and ran a program that supposed to be helpful at identifying possible threats from your task manager list, called Security Task Manager. It lists all my operations as "seemingly harmless" or less (harmless).

I'll see if I can provide the list.

Yes they are compatible meaning that you have to do a smart shutdown or w/e it was and than boot from the boot menu.I have a new Lenovo G50-70 came with windows 8.1 and I hated the **** out of it.Installed ubuntu 14 and it works without any if ands or buts
