Canon Pixma MX870 all in one . Unplugged for about three months. Plugged in , copied 200+ color pages on 'caution' ink tank alarms. Plugged phone line in to fax & zippo! Same cord as before from same connector block. It makes some sort of sound when the hook button is used but it is not dial tone. Will not connect to dialed #, was working great prior. Canon help, NO help.
All ink tanks are full, dial tone on phone coming out of machine, everything clean.

Try another phone/fax cord. You may be using a cord that worked before but those cords tend to be very cheaply made and just plugging or unplugging it can cause a failure. At least verify that the cord works somewhere else.

Have you gone into the MX 870 Device Settings to check the FAX settings?

Can you expand on "some sort of sound"?

You may hear a dial tone but can a telephone dial out on the phone line being used for faxing? Either via the Canon MX870 or directly into the line?

Were you able to test fax any other numbers?

Tried another cord, same result.
Fax settings are correct.
Phone coming out of machine works fine, strong dial tone, makes calls fine.
Sound is a very faint click as if it's connecting but when # is inputted & either black or color transmits are pushed it tries to dial but won't connect.
No error codes come up.
Canon tech support guy thinks the dialer unit went bad.
No femf got to it.
Just unplugged for two or three months. Got me.
Local Canon authorized repair people won't even look at it.
Any & all help appreciated.

"Local Canon authorized repair people won't even look at it."

Strange - wonder what that is about.....

I would try calling them again and maybe get another tech or manager. At least they should explain why and/or at least give you some clue or confirmation regarding "dailer unit went bad".

In all fairness it could be that the repair (parts & labor) now cost more than a new printer. But they should let you know that.

Or maybe they have just had it with HP themselves......

Thanks, already looking into all 'your' options and agree $$$/fix vs. $$$/new. I told Canon that maybe you could pull your head out of the cash register & make ONE print head with ONE ink tank for everything. They don't like hearing that because they know somebody else will benefit. The cash eating dragon rears it's ugly head !!!
