Canoscan N670U driver Windows 8

Beginners' question: old scanner (running fine on W7), new 64-bit machine/ O/S (W8) - how do I make it work? I can't find any drivers listed, have tried Canon site & looks like they can't be bothered supporting old stuff - even though the scanner works fine (I object to just ditching perfectly good, working stuff). Have tried installing a LIDE 20 64x driver (LIDE 20 & N670U listed as same driver for 32-bit), to no avail. Could someone explain in idiot-speak why the 32-bit & 64-bit (drivers) are different - is it like the difference between 16th century English & the 21st century version, or between English & Hungarian? Do I just keep the W7 laptop to use the scanner? One W7 thread suggested changing PID_*** values in a .inf file & other stuff - any ideas what files/values I'd have to change??
