Beginners' question: 32-bit scanner driver required, 64-bit machine - problem, or no? Would a 64-bit driver speak the same language? Do I just keep the W7 laptop to use the scanner?

64 Bit, I believe was not available in Win7 either, and no, they don't "speak the same language"

An alternative is to use VueScan, which supports Canon N670U
(there is no need to install Canon Scangear software and TWAIN drivers)

Or, try Compatibility Mode, or check out Canon Europe. Sometimes they have drivers prior to the USA sites providing them.
