I have a hp tape drive connected to my pc via a pci scsi card.my pc is running on windows xp sp2.i can view it on device manager and the card was installed without any issue.the problem is i cant access the tape drive when running the windows back up program

There are typically some required ????.sys, scsi system files required for the tapeback up drive as well (are they loaded)?. The scsi tape back ups also usually come with their own windows software for backing up. I can't tell from your description about device manager if you're infuring all drivers are loaded. Be sure and try HP for windows backup software specific to your backup drive. Also since HP doesn't manufacture scsi controllers or backup devices themselves to my knowledge try to identify the manufacturer and get recommended software.

Windows 7 (or Server 2008 either) does not, repeat NOT support backup to tape. Sorry about your luck, and Microsoft hopes that the several alternatives such as, (and I am not making this up) external hard drives or USB devices will be more convenient for you. Seriously, that's their answer on Technet. Seriously. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Wait! I can understand that M$ did not include tape backup software in its latest OS's. But are you telling me that someone else's SCSI tape system can't work in Win 7? Even if (and that may be a BIG "IF") the SCSI tape drive and SCSI interface card makers have provided drivers for use in Win 7 or at least in Vista?
