I just ran in to similar problem. Did not yet RESET the router. Just switch off / on. But I did not change anything specific, I just attached the seccond HDD to USD port 3.0. Now USB 3 light is on but USB 2 light is off. There are two HDD's. Will keep you posted. I'll play with HDD's and USB ports 1st.

Once I disconnected the second HDD from USB 3.0 I unplugged the power cord, waited 10 or so seconds and then plugged back in. GUI now works.

Cheers!

For anyone else searching for help with this issue, I had what I thought was the same problem. The router's firmware does not redirect requests. Most of my other networking gear will do the redirect so if I enter http://hostname it will redirect to https://hostname:5000 or whatever the proper address is for the device. This router does not do that. I simply forgot so I reset to factory defaults and set it all back up again only to later discover my problem likely was that I didn't know to enter https://hostname:8443 which is the default SSL port for this router.

Hi.
I have this same router.

Today, when I decidede to log on to my router, to check my bandwidth usage, I got this message in my browser when navigating to http://192.168.0.1, which is my Gateway adress, and it responds to echo requests:
This webpage is not available

Opera's connection attempt to 192.168.0.1 was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured.

Since my pc is set up with static IP 192.168.0.2, provided by my router, and this IP along with my work PC's IP, is in the allowed list for connecting to the router, I shouldnt be getting this error.

I logged in to my work PC and tried going to :8080]http://[mydomain]:8080 and recieved this message:
Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh.
Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-AC68U.
To access the settings of RT-AC68U, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number.

Thats strange I thought. Why dont I get the same message on my pc?
I also got this message when trying to go to 192.168.0.1 from my cell and tablet connected to the wireless.
So it seems only my PC gets the rejection.

Just for fun, I tried https://192.168.0.1 and got a logon message.
This was not for the routers administration UI, but for AI Cloud, which aparently is active on the router.
Don't really use this, but I discovered that I could see my local PC's on here, and actually see what files they were sharing.
Doesn't help me much when it comes to administrating my network thouh.

Now, I have tried rebooting my pc, just to check that there wasnt something funny going on there.
I also tried rebooting the router, and letting it cool for about 10 seconds.
Did not help.

I haven't tried resetting the router yet, as I have quite a few setting there, and it would be a hassle getting it back to where I was.
I did have a copy of the config from when I set it up, but ironicaly I deleted it a few days ago, because I thought it was outdated, and I didnt seem to need it.

This was a bad idea, and I wont make it again.

The last 2 things I did on the router, was to activate Telnet, and update the firmware.
This was just a few days ago, as well, but before I deletet the config.
My router seemed to work fine after the update, so I didnt think much about it.

I can log on to my router via Telnet, but the commands are so foreign to me that I dont know what to do with them.
I wish everyone was like Cisco in their OS. Hehe.
Isnt easy to find information about how to navigate the router using telnet commands either, so if someone know, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for reading.

How did you reset it back to factory defauts? holding in the reset button simply restarts it.

How do you reset it to factory conditions? Holding the reset button only restarts it. I really need to figure out how to reset it to factory, as I forgot my login and need to change settings.

That depends on the specific router.
The instructions are in the user manual, as well as the default username/password.

Yes, I tried holding the reset button for over 5 seconds (as it said), and it does not reset to factory, it simply restarts. I have the same router as the original poster, the ASUS RT-AC68U. I'm sorry if this looks like thread hijacking, but my questions are relevant to what he accomplished.

I have the AC68U and can tell you it's unlike any router I have had before with respect to the functionality for resetting it to factory defaults. I did the complete firmware restore and still was unable to obtain an IP from it (my issue was I turned off DHCP to use as a switch connected to my cheapo ATT router due to some weird connectivity issues over my powerline networking equipment) and hadn't specified a local LAN IP to get back into it).

Long story short, the way I FINALLY got it to actually reset was to hold the factory reset button down for about 6-8 seconds. You will know because the power light on the front of the router starts to blink quickly. If you continue to hold it down longer it will start to blink slowly (part of what is needed to put it in the recovery mode). It will keep cycling between fast and short blinks. I believe as long as you let go of the button when the fast blink is going on it should reset everything back. Then you should be able to (once it boots up) access it via the 192.168.1.1 or http://router.asus.com address. NOTE: You may need to perform an ipconfig /release and renew to get the new IP address from DHCP.

Hope this helps

This finally reset mine. The reset instructions in the manual didn't work but this did.

Try the following:
(1) physically turn off the router
(2) press WPS button and keep it pressed
(3) turn the router on with WPS button pressed for 5 sections after router powers on
(4) release WPS button

I just found the solution to fix this issue without hard resset.

■ It is the "message" page before the firmware upgrade start. I just changed the URL with my SSL port setting and the firmware proceed completed, after reboot by itself. All back to normal.

Try to explain it simple...
1) if you have set the admin page force to SSL with different port no. E.g. my router admin page will redirect to https://192.168.1.1:4433 automatically instead of original http://192.168.1.1

2) once you got firmware upgrade message and clicked start, it will redirect you to http://192.168.1.1/middle_upgrade.htm, then you got stuck! No matter how you power cycle, it will loop back to this page.

3) lastly I have changed the URL to https://192.168.1.1:4433/middle_upgrade.htm, and the upgrade process will continue and back to normal after reboot.

I just wanted to thank you for a simple solution to resetting my new Asus to factory default.

Your answer was quick, to the point and completely successful for me.

How then do I reset it? Pressing the reset button with power on and then power off for a long time does nothing. Pressing it for a short time does not work. The blue lights on the front panel change status and start blinking, thus apparently my reset switch is connected. The 129 page manual offers nothing on this topic.

My SSID remains valid, thus I'm not getting the reset to stick: rather than I'm doing a reset but am unable to login.

Truley a very difficult beast to get back to the Admin page. The manual talks about resetting the device but all is done from the admin page. It doesn't even touch the issue of what to do if you can't log on. My IP is the original one for this device which is: 192.168.1.1

This also worked for my RT-AC68U. This is the only solution I've found that worked. It seems that one is not using WPS to connect an additional device to the router, rather this WPS button seems as if during powerup it provides what the Reset button is supposed to do. I have no idea why Asus basically disconnected that Reset button on the back. This seems like a backdoor method to do a system reset as Asus engineers probably didn't like however they were supposed to reset the device.

Even after resetting it, my wireless devices still require a Network Key to access the Network. Thus it's clear that this is not bypassing WPA security but is actually "The Real Reset" method.

Also note that the RT-AC68U has a power switch on the back. Thus you don't need to unplug it.

My RT-AC68U is configured with SSL and a custom port and been fighting for a few days with it. I also have another ASUS at another place which has the exact same problem after a firmware upgrade.

I was able to solve this problem by deleting the offline data in the browser.
Firefox: Preferences > Advanced > Network Tab > "Offline Web Content and User Data". Search for the IP Address of your router and remove it.
Chrome: This should work http://grinninggecko.com/2011/03/29/clearing-chromes-offline-application-cache/
