So I just upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10, and now I can't access several websites for whatever reason. Like gamefaqs, ebay and hotmail/outlook email. I can access them on my phone but not my laptop. Anyone have any ideas? I've done the dns flush in the cmd prompt but no luck. No to mention the Cortana app just endlessly loads, but I suppose that's to be expected.

There both using the same wifi. On the phone it loads fine, but on the laptop it acts like it's loading but shows connection has timeout message. And it's only with those three websites.

Try pinging their domain names. Open up CMD from the start menu, and type "ping www.ebay.com". If it fails, try pinging their IP adderss with "ping 66.211.160.87" and see if either of those two work. If not, try just the IP in your browser. So instead of typing in "www.ebay.com" you will type in "66.211.160.87".

I tried pinging ebay, gamefaqs and hotmail/outlook but it just gives me the request timed out message. I've noticed that if I tried using a proxy site it'll let me access the sites. Which leaves me to believe that maybe somehow there blocked on my end.

I have just experienced the same problem after upgrading today. I went through to microsoft help and a technician took over my computer for 2 hours, unable to resolve the issue.

It is now being escalated to a more senior technician who will call me back in 2 days to go through my system once again. Will let you know whether it gets fixed.

Similarly, I am able to access all websites if I use a proxy (hotspot shield in this case)

When you accessed with your phone are you sure it was using wifi and not 3g? I've had exactly the same issue and when I checked the web server logs I can see my connection hitting the server then then it's getting refused based on the IP address, only solution was to stop trying for a couple of hours or use a proxy server to get a different IP address. I thought it was possibly Edge related but heard similar issues from people that have upgraded but using Chrome.

I'm having this same issue as well in edge and in chrome and it's the same websites on both. I also could not update windows 10. I did find however that this only seems to occur on wifi. If plug in through Ethernet all the sites open fine and I can update windows. But on wifi I can only go to certain websites like facebook. But so far I can't go to IMDB, Amazon, twitch, and various other random websites.

Try updating your Wifi card drivers. I had a client call me up the other day with a similar problem, I updated his adapter drivers (It was an MSI gaming laptop) and it has been working great ever since. Just make sure to remove the driver first. It will be under device manager -> network adapters.

Can you clarify where you found the new wifi drivers please?

From the MSI website, only drivers for windows 7 and 8 are supplied (I am also using a MSI laptop, although I note that MSI's currently selling windows 10 ready laptops now). Did you just install the windows 8 driver (dated august 2014), or managed to locate a windows 10 driver?

I don't recall downloading them from MSI's website - I downloaded them from the wifi card supplier. I want to say it was the "Killer Wifi" brand, but I could be mistaken. The driver listed in Device Manager should tell you who made it.

Otherwise, try the Windows 8 driver, there shouldn't be much of a difference.

So Are you saying that I should uninstall the driver first? I did download the new driver for my card and installed it but it won't update. And when I go through the device manager and update it and look for the driver on my computer I only get all the old ones I can't see the new one.

Yes, make sure you uninstall the driver before you install the new one. In device manager right click and hit the "Uninstall" button.

Yes, sorry for not clarifying well enough. I tried manually downloading the driver but it would not show up properly for me to install it in the device manager. So I thought maybe I just needed to uninstall the previous one first. I did that and installed the new one but it didn't do anything. So I refreshed back to my old driver. And let the system scan my computer and the Internet for an update and this time it found it and updated it. Now all sites work just fine as well as the windows update feature all through wifi. The websites seem to load much faster as well. Had a big slow down after the update to 10 on the sites it let me go to. But all is now fixed for me :)

I'm having sort of the same issue... 1. It's a firewall thing that is not an easy fix. 2. I've also started getting " unsigned security certificate " messages. I've been all over to forums and so on, and a solid solution remains elusive. I'm build and do some programming, so I'm not just an average user..... I have a HP Envy 17 that's only 2 months old and is almost useless now. Here's the thing...... Even when your blocked, you wont always get the " unsigned security certificate " messages. It is however, blocking you in exactly the same way. My I have another HP laptop that's about a year old, windows 10 installed, and it works great. My desktop works great as well, but this problem has also effected my sisters desktop. Certain pc's, for some reason? The updates are also being blocked and well as microsoft account sign in. Throughout my search, I've found that most of these problems are revolving around windows 10 firewall and the new security features that microsoft has put into this version of windows. Someone has to have a solution or at least some kind of temporary work around.

just want to throw a shout out for the help and a solution i used to fix the issue.
1. Open up control panel
2. click "uninstall a program"
3. Find whatever software is the one for your wifi connection and right click it. For me it was "qualcomm atheros qca9377 wireless lan and bluetooth"
4. Click "change"
5. when its done loading click "repair" then okay and then when its done let it restart your computer.

This fixed the issue for me and hopefully it helps others out too

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS POST!! I resolved my issue regarding wifi not gaining access to some sites while I can access it when connected via Ethernet.

Hello

I had the same issue
: after windows 10 update, my alienware 17 R2 couldn't reach some websites on any browser

Although I had installed the lastest wireless card driver from dell website, I went to device manager, and did an auto-update driver search

after the update, I can navigate without any restrictions and started to enjoy win 10

Thank you so much Carlos - I had the exact same problem with my Alienware 17 R2 - and after 30 min talking to Alienware Support, installing new drivers, running CCClean etc, they couldnt fix the problem.
However, doing what you suggested worked perfectly! thanks again, PeterC
