I have an Asus VG248QE, which has a refresh rate of 144Hz. I am running on Windows 8.1 64bit with a GTX 770. However, when I go into the windows settings for display, under the monitor tab it says Generic PnP Monitor and the highest refresh rate I can put it on is 60Hz.
Is the HDMI cable to blame? It did not come with the monitor and I'm not sure how old it is.

HDMI is HDMI, it cant support 1080p 120hz.
Chances are it says supports 240hz because it technically does when the TV is whats inserting new frames (interpolation, not true 240hz video) rather than it having to carry the video. Its also possible it means 240hz at some tiny resolution like 640x320, just never tells you that.

Okay, thanks. So now that I've eliminated HDMI from my options, would you recommend going with Dual Link DVI or DisplayPort? I want support for 144Hz (and 1ms response time if that matters) at 1920x1080 while still maintaining good image quality. I know there are different types of DVI and I'm not sure about DisplayPort, but what specifically will suit my needs do you think?

If the monitor supports Displayport, then Displayport will work, but so will Dual Link DVI-D.

The monitor should have come with a Dual Link DVI-D cable.

Oh, wow, I completely forgot it came with this cable, so I guess I'll be using DVI then :)
