Hi. First post here and I am hopeful I can get some help.

I recently tried installing a new mbo in my desktop as it had maxed the ram and needed more.

I purchased the Gigabyte Ga G33m s2 after careful research and compatibility checks with the socket/processor etc.

After install I try to boot and it lands on system restore bur can't fix the problem.

My knowledge is limited but I'm assuming the issue could be drivers. One thing I didn't do is remove/replace cmos....would this help.

Any information or help would be gratefully appreciated. If you need more info from me I will try to supply it.

P.s I have a dual core cpu.

That was my next option. I don't have the boot disc for new install windows. Was looking on the Web this morning for a win 7 disc oem. Would that work? Is there another way without having the disc?

Yeah defo legit one. Was surprised to see that they aren't too badly priced. I might try Linux for now just to check everything else.

I'm going to assume you went from a G31 chipset to G33 as you haven't given enough information to solve the problem.

If so, the problem is you went from ICH7 to ICH9 for the disk controller without having the ICH9 driver installed. Compounding the issue is the G33/ICH9 board likely has AHCI enabled in the BIOS which the ICH7 does not support.

Spot on. So if I goto bios and change that setting it may work? I did as much research as I could take in and got tech advice on the board.

I have tried booting with the adjusted settings but still no joy. Lands on the startup repair wizard and can't fix issue. So I suppose it seems that buying a new disc to install is my next option....

If you tried it with SATA Port0-3 Native Mode set to Disabled then you've done what is possible without reassembling the G31 system using extra parts such as a SATA card. Even if you had a spare IDE drive the ICH7 has native IDE while the ICH9 uses a jMicron chip.

Microsoft has removed the Win 7 isos from digitalriver but if you have a cd-key you can still get them here.
Or some helpful person has archived all of them here.

Thankyou very much for your instance. I have ordered win 7 so will be attempting the fresh install within the next few days.

Solved. Purchased oem windows 7 home premium. Run as directed. Worked. Note to others with similar issue...you might have to change boot order....ie boot from cdrom.
