I have a laptop (win7) and desktop (vista) in a network. The laptop is wireless and the desktop is hard-wired into a d-link router. My computer recently updated and since then I cannot connect to my desktop from my laptop. The desktop shows up in the network map but when I click it, it hangs and says "network path not found". I can ping the IP and the name of the PC from command line but I cannot access it. I have internet connectivity the whole time regardless and I've tried multiple routers.

-Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Make sure client for microsoft networks is installed on your lan device which you use to connect. Properties for the network device. You should also see ipv6 and ipv4 checked and installed along with file and printer sharing. Link layer mapper and responder and Qos packet scheduler. Netbios should be active under ipv4. Make sure all PC's are on the same "workgroup." I do not use homegroup, but make sure network discover is checked under advanced sharing. It is up to you on whether you choose password protected sign on for each networked pc, but should not matter if you are just running a lan to gain access to shared drives. I run three laptops (one mac), 4 desktops and a host of mobile devices in my home network and can connect without issues. I use Bitdefender, so I opened up the local ip address on each computer in the firewall. No configuration to change the port however. If you have a third party like bitdefender, make sure windows firewall is off. Finally if you run vm ware on any pc you pretty much have to turn off or uninstall the vmware bridge to your network card. It took a couple of days to figure this out, but it worked.

Worked for me, I have just enabled the network discovery and worked... Thanks a lot.. :) 👍

i have this same issue

i have two pcs in question, one is main pc that shares out alot of data
one is my laptop which i cant access the main pc on
main pc can access laptops shared folders no problem
laptop cant even see main pc in network and typing out hostname or ip address comes up with cannot find e.g \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
there are two other laptops on the network which can both see and access main pc and laptop
laptop can ping main pc no problem and resolve the hostname via command line
the settings on these folders and in the sharing section is all correct and even so i never get prompted for a password ... main pc just doesnt exist as a pc in which to access as far as this laptop is concerned
tried both wireless and wired connections
homegroup are the same
dhcp and static ip addresses make no difference
same version windows
antivirus and all other securities disabled makes no difference
releasing ip as stated above doesn't make a difference
this laptop can connect to shared folders on the other laptops to
just a problem between these two specific computers and can find absolutely no remedy!
