Hello, Let me start off by saying I am not necessarily "well-versed" in this tech, but I know enough to somewhat get by.

I have an Asus M5A78L-M LX Motherboard and I'm trying to disable the onboard graphics on it, but I've looked everywhere (in the BIOS and the web) and cannot find an answer. I recently got a XFX Radeon R9 280x (3GB DDR5 Double Dissipation) graphics card and have spent the entire day trying to install it. The card is in place, and connected via 2 PCI-E cables (1 x 8 pin, 1 x 6 pin) but the fans don't start up and nothing hints that it is working at all (AMD Catalyst Control Centre doesn't even register that it's there). Every time I change my Internal Graphics settings in the BIOS it continues not to work and Windows displays normally with the onboard graphics.

Please, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Since I am unsure if anyone would need any other info, I will leave my build specs below.

Motherboard - Asus M5A78L-M LX
GPU - XFX Radeon R9 280x
PSU - Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 850 W
CPU - AMD FX 6350 3.9 GHz 6-Core
8GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit
Monitor is connected via VGA to motherboard, and uses a VGA - DVI adapter for the graphics card

Thank you.

Solution
usually iGPU will disable itself when the system detects another GPU (which means there should be no signal out of the DVI port in the motherboard, only from the GPU), unless you specifically tell it to not use that GPU. Chances are your GPU might be defective.

There could be other issues at work, such as defective or loose PCI power cables, defective power supply, etc.
your motherboard use manual will tle you exactly how to set it in bios and did you try the gpu only on the monitor not using the onboard . also if the fan dont start this means she is not receiving power check if she is well seated in the slot in the motherboard .

I've checked my user manual and it says to set the internal graphics to GFX0, but it still doesn't work. and If I try plugging my monitor into my GPU nothing appears as it isn't doing anything at all.

I hope not. I installed it with someone else so I'd have to check with them.
