If you're reinstalling the OS in the same system, you do not need the "license key".

Just install it. It will activate itself once the activation servers see the same PC.

Microsoft told me to make a copy from another computer onto a flash drive. Then install it onto the computer with the new hard drive. when it has finished it will ask me for the key code. There is no code anywhere on the laptop or the box or the instruction books.

Create a Win 10 install USB or DVD here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Boot from that on the affected laptop.
Install
Assuming this laptop had a valid license at some point, you will not need the license key.
