Ok, I'm trying to set up a wired network (it will not have an internet connection) with a Linksys BEFVP41 EtherFast Cable/DSL VPN Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch. (Whew!) So I'm trying to set it up with a MacBook Pro 13" running OSX 10.8.4. I have the computer directly wired to the router with (obviously) an ethernet cable. Anyways, this router has a row of lights on it above the port # this is plugged into with "Link/Act" green, "Full/Col" green, "100" orange. Then above WAN: "Link" green, "Act" red, "Diag" red. Power is green. Now on the computer, in system preferences under network, under ethernet, here's what shows up:

Status: Connected (Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 169.254.186.231.)
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
IP Address: 169.254.186.231
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Router:
DNS Server:
Search Domains:

As you can see, the router is assigning the computer an IP address, but I can't see the router address. To set up my network, I need to type the router IP address into the browser to access its control page. (Right?) Currently when I type the linksys standard router IP address, nothing shows up. Except when I'm connected to the wifi (which also happens to be a linksys router). So when I'm not connected to wifi, the standard IP address for linksys routers does NOT work.

EDIT: I've tried factory resetting it as well. The online page says the power light should be blinking when you hold down the reset button. It doesn't, and nothing changes.

Thanks!
Noah

Yeah, that's the standard IP address, right? It's never worked. Here's what comes up when I type it in: "Safari can't open the page http://192.168.1.1/ because the server where the page is located isn't responding."

maybe your broweser is hajacked ...

try accessing it from a different PC , or a mobile phone and see if you can connect to 192.168.1.1

you can also Factory reset the router .. will be as new, but you will have to enter the internet configuration again and ID and password .

I don't think so.. But I will try it from a different computer, and since it's not wireless a mobile phone wouldn't work. And that's the thing, I got this from my grandpa who was getting rid of a bunch of stuff, so I'm not even sure what it's configuration is right now anyways. Factory resetting would be unplugging it and holding down the reset button for 30 seconds?

read this :) http://pcsupport.about.com/od/linksys-default-passwords/a/befvp41-default-password.htm

Hmm. Well, I can't access the page to change the password without the IP address. According to this page, that have been changed to the default Gateway IP address... To find that on a mac, you go into the settings and that's what I showed above... The router's IP address isn't there. It's blank. I have no idea what's causing this...

then Factory reset it .. read the manual and see how to do it .. I think you need to press a button for like 20 seconds ...

Yeah, I did. It says the power light on the front should be blinking when you hold down the reset button. Nothing happens. Nothing changes. Weird.
