hey guys I need help. I cant play online games without lag .
I'm currently on a 4mbps line but my computer only gives me 518 kbps and under. on games and downloads. I really don't know what to do anymore. in task manager it says steam/ or whatever app I'm trying to download with is using 4mbps but in the app it only downloads 518-470 kbps. im using wire too router. please help

Solution
Download speeds are not really relevant to gaming as the amount of data sent is very small, however the speed of the connection will impact the minimum latency you can achieve. as a rough guite 1mbit = 100ms 10mbit=50ms 100mbit = 10ms... depending where the server is.

If your latency is high but stable then a faster connection or more local server would help.. if you are getting spikes and dropouts etc.. then you need to look is the health of your connection, and what is utilising it.. some form of qos may help if you have a more advanced router.

You can play games with that speed. You just have to be careful to not swamp it while gaming. Make sure to not download while playing.

There are some QoS options that work if it's from a swamped link and manually managing it isn't what you want. edgerouter x, openwrt, ddwrt, ipfire are a few routers that help bufferbloat. if your download and upload speeds are very consistent qos will work.

is 4Mbs the best you can get? is it docsis or dsl? sat will be unusable, 4g is bearable if you have decent reception.

as failboat is suggesting. you might be getting your units mixed up.

Your internet connection will be 4 Megabits = 4000 kilobits per second.

8 bits = 1 byte. therefore divide the speed of your connection by 8 to get a megabyte/kilobyte per secont value.

In this case 0.5MB/s or 500kBps.. the figures you quote are fine.

Note the convention is that a little b means bits, and a capital B means bytes.
Throughput values in windows are typically shown in Bytes.

Hope this helps.

Your bandwidth & download speeds are spot on mathematically - - - what you really need for online gaming is more bandwidth if it's available where you live. Something like a 20mbps service at least is what you should be looking for, especially if it's being shared by family members.
