Question Can't go over 1280 x 800

I just built a new PC, running with a MSI Pro Z790-A motherboard, and a GEForce RTX Ventus 3060. My monitor is a Dell 3007 WFP with a DVI connector.

On my previous PC, which had a GEForce 8800 GTX and running Windows 7, I was able to get 1900 x 1200.

But for some reason, I do not have any options past 1280 x 800.

The HDMI to DVI cable I am using is this bi-directional cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DI89O9Y/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza?th=1

So, am hoping someone can give me some ideas on why I can't get a better resolution.

Many thanks!

8800GTX should be able to output the monitor's native 2560 x 1600 resolution... provided you use a dual-link DVI cable. 1920 x 1200 maximum means you only used a single-link cable.

Passive HDMI to DVI pinout adapters must necessarily be single-link and thus are also theoretically limited to 1080p or 1200p. If this is acceptable to you, go into "Advanced Display Settings" and click on the blue Display Adapter Properties for your display, then "List All Modes" to see if 1920 x 1080 or 1200 are there. If it is, select it and click OK through all the open dialog boxes to change to it.

Being limited to standard resolutions can also mean you haven't installed the card driver and are using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver.

Hey, thanks for your reply. My new card is the GEForce RTX 3060, which should be able to handle anything.

I did as you said, and 1280 x 800 is all there is. So, are you thinking that, even though the description of the cable says "dual link", it is only single link? Perhaps I need to purchase some adapter or another cable?

What driver version are you using?

Driver version is: 31.0.15.3141
Driver Date: 3/16/2023

I'm reading on a few pages that no HDMI to dual link DVI-D exists? That I need to go the route of Display Port to DVI-D.

Any thoughts on that?

RTX3060 is not able to handle dual-link DVI. It runs single-link HDMI at twice the speed, but when you use an adapter it must drop to the same 165MHz that DVI runs at, because the monitor cannot negotiate a higher speed. The 8800GTX should work in your new system until you get a new monitor but is of course way slower, and then you'd actually need the proper cable to get the monitor's native resolution.

The adapter ad copy says you can put it into a dual-link port but does not claim it can run in dual-link. That's why it says 1080p max.

When you use a non-native resolution like 1080p you get scaling artifacts and it's blurry. However 1280x800 should look perfectly sharp, though blocky--because it is exactly 1/2 the resolution in each direction and so scales perfectly. So you might prefer to run that until you get a new monitor.

Input Hdmi to Dvi here and you'll see they only come as single link. Albeit single link still supports 16:10 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz.

You might want to give custom resolution utility a go and put resolution in manually.

Some very good info here. Appreciate the assistance. So, I'll either look into a newer monitor, with HDMI input, or perhaps a Display Port to DVI-D adapter. The adapter will be cheaper than the monitor, so may try with that first.

Appreciate all the info.

There do appear to be displayport to Dual-Link DVI-D adapters for around $50. As these need to be active adapters with circuitry they require power to work (which is usually supplied by a USB-A cable) and will of course add latency. It depends on whether you'd rather put that money toward a better monitor that's G-sync compatible.
